The Kumano Kodo is a thousand-year-old pilgrimage route that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. It stretches south of Kyoto through the prefectures of Wakayama, Mie, Nara, and Osaka. This region—the Kii Peninsula—is considered the spiritual center of Japan, as it is home to the three major shrines known as the Kumano Sanzan. The Ise Shrine, Japan’s largest sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu, is also part of the pilgrimage route. However, the Kumano Kodo should not be perceived as a single trail with a defined start and end point. Instead, it is a comprehensive network of seven routes that intersect and complement each other, stretching over 600 kilometers through dense japanese cedar forests. Through over two hundred color photographs, this photo book explores the two-time journey along the route and attempts to capture what words alone cannot describe.
